Rubik Cubes For Geek

Just deleted another item in my wishlist. I gave a presentation at BarCampSingapore4 this morning. It was held at IDA Singapore (Suntec Tower 3). I contacted Preetam Rai on Thursday and ask for a slot to present, contacted Benson on Friday for help, created the slides on Friday night. It all happened within 72 hours, very last minute. Anyway I really have to thank Benson for this help.

I talked about Rubik’s cube, in a small meeting room. The room has about 10 chairs, but there were more then 10 people. The response was quite good :D . We planned to demo Fridrich and Lar Petrus method, but it wasn’t carried out due to time constraint. Some of them wanted a hands-on, I guess I can do that at the next barcamp. Anyway, these are the slides:

White DIY Cube

DIY cube, bought at Anchopoint.

DIY cube, bought at Anchopoint.

I went to Anchorpoint yesterday, and I came across this shop called Bloomington Greeting. It is at #B1-34. There are many interesting things over there, including (but not limited to) boardgames and Rubik’s cube. I’m the Boss cost $69.90. There are also many types of cubes. Besides Rubik brand, there are also a number of other “brandless” DIY cubes. Some of them are colored semi translucent, while the others are colored (blue, green, green, black, …).

The price varies with colors. I bought a white color cube. It came with a plastic bag, 1 cube, 1 set of stickers (orange green, yellow, red, blue, white, and black), and 6 center face covers. It cost me $9.90. I also bought an extra set of sticker ($1.50) for my old cube. This is also a brandless sticker. Rubik brand sticker cost $2.50.

This DIY brandless cube cost the same as the normal Rubik cube, but the quality is better! Those Rubik brand DIY cubes cost more then $19 each. This brandless cube is already very smooth, no need 30 rounds of cubbing to smooth it out. I don’t think I will be lubbing it anytime soon. The spring is looser, you can adjust it if you want.
